Stanwood Camano Physical Therapy’s philosophy about training children and adolescents parallels the beliefs of the International Youth Conditioning Association (IYCA). “Developmentally-sound, fun and goal-oriented exposure to fitness and sport is a necessary building block in progressing through the formative years into adulthood. Our collective passion to recapture the innocence of play and fitness for children and teenagers worldwide knows absolutely no boundaries.”  - IYCA

Coach Joe’s Fun Fit for Youth (ages 8-18) is an after school program so school age children can become fit, coordinated, and athletic in a fun atmosphere. In class there are a variety of physical activities including traversing our climbing wall.

Alarming Statistics:

  • School-aged children spend as much as 35-55 hours per week watching TV or playing video games.
  • Watching TV and playing video games are risk factors for becoming overweight (17–44% increased risk) or obese (10–61% increased risk).
  • Less than 25% of children get 20 minutes of vigorous activity per day.
  • Between the ages of six and 18, activity levels drop 24% and 36% for boys and girls, respectively.
  • Obese children are more likely to have the following health problems:
    • High blood pressure
    • High cholesterol
    • Impaired glucose tolerance, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes
    • Problems breathing like sleep apnea or asthma
    • Joint injuries and musculoskeletal pain
    • Fatty liver disease
    • Gallstones
    • Heart burn
    • Social and psychological problems
  • Health problems caused by obesity contribute to 300,000 deaths each year in the U. S.
  • According to the National Institutes of Health, children who are obese have a life expectancy 2-5 years less than their parents.
  • Meanwhile, regular physical activity reduces risk of becoming overweight (10–24% reduced risk) or obese (23–43% reduced risk).

We want to change the mindset of today’s youth when it comes to physical activity. Our goal is to show children that moving makes you feel good and should be a positive experience. Our movement classes group kids together with their peers so they can cheer each other on as they work out. Encouragement from other children is what keeps our participants coming back.

Athletic ability is not something people are born with, but skills that develop over the long-term. Unstructured play is an invaluable step in the progression of developing coordination in all children. During play is when children can have fun experimenting with moving their body in any way they are able to imagine. This experimentation builds a database of stored movement patterns the child can use to relate to new or more complex movements as they grow up. Many children are not getting the free time they need to develop this body awareness. We feel no child should be self-conscious moving their own body.

Our intent with Coach Joe’s Movement Classes is to assist children with building the foundation of movements needed to learn new skills. As children move along side their peers, they will progressively build the complexity of movements. We realize every kid’s dream is not to be a professional athlete, but if they develop athleticism, they will be more likely carry on the healthy habit of including fitness as a part of their life. If we can create a positive experience for children when they are moving their bodies, we can start to reverse the overweight and obesity epidemic.
